Hello,
This week’s word is escribitionist (pronounced eh-scri- bit-shun-ist like exhibitionist). I spotted this is “Road Side Crosses” by Jeffrey Deaver and I thought it was a neat coined word. According to Wikipedia the word sources from English and Spanish and defines someone who blogs solely about their own experiences, rather than discussing wider topics like politics or word definitions. I hope I am not an escribitionist.
However I do have two pieces of writing news this week as well as a word discussion.
The first is to mention “First Kill” by PJ Callahan. I bought PJ’s debut thriller novel at his book launch because he had read a few extracts at our writing group and I wanted to support him. But other writers at the launch who had read more of the book raved about it, so I purchased more copies as Christmas gifts. I’m delighted that I did, because it really is very good. The plot (a case of mistaken identity throws two innocent teenage girls into a race for their lives from secret islands, vicious killers, and corrupt police officers) surges along and his background as a pilot makes the flying scenes just excellent even for a non-pilot like me. There’s even a dog-fight finale. If you like thrillers, it’s worth checking out.
The second is (in a slightly escribitionist moment) to mention that I’ve just been published in the 2012 Bylines Calendar. This is the fourth time one of my personal essays has been featured in the diary/writing workbook and this year I have a spare copy which I want to give away to one of my blog readers here. The ring-bound book works as a page-per-week diary with an inspiring writing essay on the opposite page from writers worldwide. There’s also an excellent set of goal-setting pages, links to useful sites, note pages, literary holidays, contact pages etc. I find mine very useful – it’s sitting on my desk beside me as I type this.
So – to be in with a chance to win the book, just leave a comment below and I’ll draw the winner at random on Monday 23rd January (noon GMT). I’ll post the result here and mail the book to the winner. Good luck everyone.
Until next time, happy reading, writing, and wordfooling,
Grace
An escribionist? I love that word. Another word I’m fond of is “inscription”, which has several related meanings, but for me it was the message my (late) husband would write in books we gave as gifts. He was so good at making the message really personal, often emphasizing the recipient’s sterling qualities.
I love to write & read inspirational pieces….what a way to start a day. Thanks for hosting.
No Grace, you’re not an escribitionist at all! Maybe you could be described as a vocabularist? Or a dictionarist? Thanks for spreading the word. And if that’s not enough sucking up, I don’t know what will earn me a free book…
See you tomorrow,
Noelle
I love ByLines. I have yet to use their planner but have gone to them for inspiration in the past. I knew the former editor very well and miss their magazine.
Escribitionist, I love it. Love words, have a “Forgotten English” daily calender note pad and todays word is … bludget … apparently this is a female thief who decoys her victims into alleys or other dark places. Hmmm I feel a story coming on, great title The Escribitionist Bludget.
Love the sound of the calender so hope I’m lucky! Love the blog by the way.
Oh I hadn’t heard of a bludget – what a great word – sounds like a budget that’s particularly harsh and bludgeoning!
I had that Forgotten English desk calendar a few years back and really enjoyed it too. You have another 11 months of fun words ahead of you.
And the winner is…Noelle!
Congratulations – the book will go in the post to you tomorrow, Noelle.
Thanks for taking part everybody else. Some of you may be aware that Noelle is a member of my local writing group, but I got my son to pick the name out of my hat so it was all above board.
Yippee! Thanks to your son for finding my name in the said hat. His bribe (sweeties) will be in the post by return.
This has indeed been a memorable day for those of us who entered the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award, and for me winning the diary.
